However, manager Luis de la Fuente was forced to take him off the field in the first half.

As he hobbled off the field, the middle player was observed making faces on the field.

He attempted to speak further but was compelled to break down in tears.

The Catalans will now have to wait anxiously to find out how serious the injury is.

Unfortunately, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has confirmed that Gavi has suffered a serious knee injury.

The RFEF stated: “It’s a serious injury to his right knee, but we need to wait to see how bad it actually is.”

And Barca and Spain team-mate Ferran Torres celebrated his goal by hoisting Gavi’s number nine shirt aloft, leaving fans to conclude the injury would be a bad one.

One tweeted: “Ferran celebrates goal by holding up Gavi’s shirt….not a good sign at all”

And another wrote: “Spain v Georgia: Minute 20-23: Gavi seems to suffer a knee injury, tries to get back onto the pitch, but injures it again(?). Is subbed off.

“Minute 55: Ferran Torres scores, celebrates by holding up Gavi’s shirt. I assume they have gotten some bad news from the medics”

When Gavi joined Barcelona in 2021, he immediately made an impact on the scene.

His exceptional vision and passing ability led to early comparisons labelling him as the ‘next Xavi’.

Since then, the playmaker has made 111 appearances for the dominant LaLiga team.

Barcelona has placed all of their expectations on Gavi this season because to Pedri and Frenkie de Jong’s injury.

De Jong is anticipated to be healthy following the international break, while the latter has just now made a comeback to the first squad.

Thanks to goals from Robin Le Normand, Torres, and an own goal by Luka Lochoshvili, Spain defeated Georgia 3-1.
